This picture shows a moment in time, a very nice memory I have. I remember the location, the atmosphere, even the ingredients of the breakfast that I had. 2008, in a breakfast cafe at Amsterdam Avenue, where large mirrors covered almost all of one wall. It was my first and only time in New York, just a few days after the Lehman Brothers bank went bankrupt (start of the financial crisis) and a few weeks before Barack Obama was elected president.
Years later I painted this from a photograph that I had made. I loved the composition, the mirror effects and the blue and green neon lights that kind of frame it. Maybe I even knew I wanted to paint this when I took the picture. But I’m not sure.My choices for subjects to paint are more often based on coincidence and intuition than on anything else.
