This was painted after a picture I found in an overview of the best pictures in Paris Match, a famous French magazine. The book is full of amazing black-and-white pictures of all sorts of famous people, mostly from the fifties and sixties. I wasn’t interested so much in depicting Marilyn Monroe as a person. Most of all I liked the combination of her fluffy outfit, her roundy female shapes and then that huge, rough body of the elephant. I had read that the elephant's skin had  a kind of pinkish color, so I exaggerated that by using dark pink for even more contrast.
